Pig Flu Sparks Epidemic Fears

An exotic flu strain identified in Hong Kong appears to have crossed from pigs to humans, triggering memories of a global flu pandemic which killed 20 million people in 1918.Although health officials in the former colony are anxious not to cause panic, they are monitoring the new strain closely. The infection, reported in New Scientist magazine, was identified in a 10-month-old girl admitted to Hong Kong's Tuen Mun hospital in late September.A chicken flu strain caused panicAlthough she was successfully treated, the virus bears all the molecular hallmarks of a porcine, or pig, strain. This is a source of concern because research published in 1997 suggested that a virus which jumped from pigs to people was the source of the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918.Alan Hay, director of the World Health Organisation influenza collaborating centre at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, said: "We're monitoring the case very carefully for that reason. We don't know the ins and outs of this yet."

Curiosity kills the accident victims

Whenever there is an accident on the road, lots of cars will be slowing down at that point of the road to curiously 'care' about what had happened. Unknown to them, they are making a very serious offence, which can be summarized as road-hogging.Whenever they slow down their vehicles, it would create a chain reaction causing a standstill for cars a few kilometres down the road. This would create an unnecessary traffic congestion, resulting in time, energy wasted for the driver on the road. Worst still, sometimes, even vehicles at the other side of the road also slow down, resulting massive jams over both sides of the road.Beside that, when the eyes of the driver or motorcyclists are not fix on the road, there are bound to be other low velocity accidents as well, causing unnecessary injuries. All that above may seem trivial, but unknown to them, in most scenes of accidents, there will inevitably be lots of casualty of the accident which required urgent help from the wreckage or medical assistance/resuscitation. With all this traffic jam or road hogging, plus some vehicles even use the emergency lane, it is almost impossible for the ambulance or fire engine to arrive at the scene in time (unless the ministry of health had decided to fix wings into all ambulance in Malaysia). Thus, the blood of dead casualties of accident is splattered all over the hands of drivers who decided to slow down and relieve their curiosity. The Malaysian traffic police force, too, share a fair amount of responsibility (and blood on their hands as well) as they are the one that should ensure a good flow of traffic and slapped those road hoggers with hefty fine. The traffic police may not catch all the curious culprits, but at least, this would serve as a reminder to the rest. They should never spare the rod and spoil the child as many lives are at stake. All this is not a new phenomenon, and have been going on for ages, I urge the traffic police force to take instant action before the public begins to doubt your competency and common sense in this life-saving affair

Let The People Decide On The choice Of School

LAST week, a senior government officer,an uncle of mine in Putrajaya told me his eldest son completed his studies at International School Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) and was now working with Petronas.I asked him what the difference was between his son and those who studied at Sekolah Kebangsaan. He said there is indeed a vast difference. He discovered, to his happiness, that his son has high self-esteem and was very confident of himself; he likes to read and is very articulate, with an excellent command of English. He is very lucky. Not so the majority of Malaysians who can't afford to send their children to international schools. In the 1950s, 60s and early 70s, children from poor families, including myself, were able to study in English-medium schools (Batu Road Boys School). Going to an English school has benefited me tremendously. The present generation is the product of the post-Merdeka education system, where a majority have to struggle to master the English language. Many are unable to read basic English reading materials such as newspapers, not to mention serious scholarly work or novels.Since they are handicapped in English they depend very much on the government for employment as English is not widely used in government departments.I don't understand why the government will not re-introduce English-medium schools while retaining vernacular schools. The rakyat should be given the option of deciding which schools they want their children to go to, as in the old days. Going to an English school doesn't mean we are less nationalistic or may lose our ability to speak Bahasa Malaysia.I don't see any problem re-introducing English-medium schools, except for the possible repercussions for some politicians. But these politicians must not only think of themselves. They must think of future generations. The present government must muster the political will to re-introduce English-medium schools, beginning from Primary One. Malaysia is a multiracial country and our history is different from Japan, France, Russia and Germany. Indonesian graduates have problems marketing themselves overseas for lack of English compared to the Indian subcontinent graduates, where English is used as a medium of instruction.
