Pig Flu Sparks Epidemic Fears

An exotic flu strain identified in Hong Kong appears to have crossed from pigs to humans, triggering memories of a global flu pandemic which killed 20 million people in 1918.Although health officials in the former colony are anxious not to cause panic, they are monitoring the new strain closely. The infection, reported in New Scientist magazine, was identified in a 10-month-old girl admitted to Hong Kong's Tuen Mun hospital in late September.A chicken flu strain caused panicAlthough she was successfully treated, the virus bears all the molecular hallmarks of a porcine, or pig, strain. This is a source of concern because research published in 1997 suggested that a virus which jumped from pigs to people was the source of the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918.Alan Hay, director of the World Health Organisation influenza collaborating centre at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, said: "We're monitoring the case very carefully for that reason. We don't know the ins and outs of this yet."

Curiosity kills the accident victims

Whenever there is an accident on the road, lots of cars will be slowing down at that point of the road to curiously 'care' about what had happened. Unknown to them, they are making a very serious offence, which can be summarized as road-hogging.Whenever they slow down their vehicles, it would create a chain reaction causing a standstill for cars a few kilometres down the road. This would create an unnecessary traffic congestion, resulting in time, energy wasted for the driver on the road. Worst still, sometimes, even vehicles at the other side of the road also slow down, resulting massive jams over both sides of the road.Beside that, when the eyes of the driver or motorcyclists are not fix on the road, there are bound to be other low velocity accidents as well, causing unnecessary injuries. All that above may seem trivial, but unknown to them, in most scenes of accidents, there will inevitably be lots of casualty of the accident which required urgent help from the wreckage or medical assistance/resuscitation. With all this traffic jam or road hogging, plus some vehicles even use the emergency lane, it is almost impossible for the ambulance or fire engine to arrive at the scene in time (unless the ministry of health had decided to fix wings into all ambulance in Malaysia). Thus, the blood of dead casualties of accident is splattered all over the hands of drivers who decided to slow down and relieve their curiosity. The Malaysian traffic police force, too, share a fair amount of responsibility (and blood on their hands as well) as they are the one that should ensure a good flow of traffic and slapped those road hoggers with hefty fine. The traffic police may not catch all the curious culprits, but at least, this would serve as a reminder to the rest. They should never spare the rod and spoil the child as many lives are at stake. All this is not a new phenomenon, and have been going on for ages, I urge the traffic police force to take instant action before the public begins to doubt your competency and common sense in this life-saving affair

Let The People Decide On The choice Of School

LAST week, a senior government officer,an uncle of mine in Putrajaya told me his eldest son completed his studies at International School Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) and was now working with Petronas.I asked him what the difference was between his son and those who studied at Sekolah Kebangsaan. He said there is indeed a vast difference. He discovered, to his happiness, that his son has high self-esteem and was very confident of himself; he likes to read and is very articulate, with an excellent command of English. He is very lucky. Not so the majority of Malaysians who can't afford to send their children to international schools. In the 1950s, 60s and early 70s, children from poor families, including myself, were able to study in English-medium schools (Batu Road Boys School). Going to an English school has benefited me tremendously. The present generation is the product of the post-Merdeka education system, where a majority have to struggle to master the English language. Many are unable to read basic English reading materials such as newspapers, not to mention serious scholarly work or novels.Since they are handicapped in English they depend very much on the government for employment as English is not widely used in government departments.I don't understand why the government will not re-introduce English-medium schools while retaining vernacular schools. The rakyat should be given the option of deciding which schools they want their children to go to, as in the old days. Going to an English school doesn't mean we are less nationalistic or may lose our ability to speak Bahasa Malaysia.I don't see any problem re-introducing English-medium schools, except for the possible repercussions for some politicians. But these politicians must not only think of themselves. They must think of future generations. The present government must muster the political will to re-introduce English-medium schools, beginning from Primary One. Malaysia is a multiracial country and our history is different from Japan, France, Russia and Germany. Indonesian graduates have problems marketing themselves overseas for lack of English compared to the Indian subcontinent graduates, where English is used as a medium of instruction.

Love Story by Taylor Swift

We were both young when I first saw you I close my eyes and the flashbacks start I'm standing there On a balcony in summer air See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns I see you make your way through the crowd And say hello Little did I know That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet" And I was crying on the staircase Begging you, please don't go And I said Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess It's a love story Baby, just say yes So, I sneak out to the garden to see you We keep quiet cause we're dead if they knew So close your eyes Escape this town for a little while Oh oh Cause you were Romeo, I was the scarlet letter And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet" But you were my everything to me I was begging you, please don't go And I said Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess It's a love story Baby, just say yes Romeo, save me They try to tell me how I feel This love is difficult, but it's real Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess It's a love story Baby, just say yes Oh oh I got tired of waiting Wondering if you were ever coming around My faith in you is fading When I met you on the outskirts of town And I said Romeo, save me I've been feeling so alone I keep waiting for you, but you never come Is this in my head I don't know what to think He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring And said Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have to be alone I love you and that's all I really know I talked to your dad Go pick out a white dress It's a love story Baby, just say yes Oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh 'Cause we were both young when I first saw you

Sonnet 116 Let me not to marriage of true minds

Let me not to the marriage of true mindsAdmit impediments. Love is not loveWhich alters when it alteration finds,Or bends with the remover to remove:O no! it is an ever-fixed markThat looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark,Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeksWithin his bending sickle's compass come:Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,But bears it out even to the edge of doom.If this be error and upon me proved,I never writ, nor no man ever loved

The National-School Dilemma....ACT NOW ON THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

There have been a number of calls in the past by educationists, community leaders and parents on this crucial subject of national schools. Indeed, there is nothing to add to what Yesuiah has already said.Suffice to say that issues that hinder national unity and integration of our multiracial and multireligious society must be identified and resolved quickly to reduce racial polarisation among our children, the future voters. Having just one school system from pre-school to tertiary level would certainly contribute towards national unity and racial harmony.I hope that the government, and particularly Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, will consider this matter seriously with a view to bringing significant changes to the current education system to accommodate the changes advocated by educationists and other concerned parties.

Is There Life After SPM

THERE is a world of opportunities beyond college and university open to school-leavers after their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. And a group of young go-getters is hoping to inspire students with tales of successes, failures and everything in between.they are an Organised committee,a member Yeoh Chen Chow says the group is seeking young people to write about their experiences after SPM which it intends to compile for a book called What’s After SPM?.“Many of us realised that some are fortunate they knew what they could do after SPM,” he says.Others, however, cannot imagine life beyond secondary school. The point of the book, Yeoh adds, is not to tell run-of-the-mill stories of entering college or university but to inform about other paths people have chosen to pursue after school. The group has received narratives of travels in exotic locales and bold business ventures, for instance.“We hope that the book will reach every school library in Malaysia to give students the inspiration to pursue whatever they want.” There is no “best” or “right” route to take after school; any course can be good if you make the best of it and remain passionate about what you do.As this is a community service project, none of the participants, project committee members and project advisers will receive any form of royalty or payment.A fund-raiser will be held to collect money for the project and excess funds will go towards distributing the books to students and secondary schools for free.So far 53 entries have been sent in and the group is confident that the target of 100 will be reached by the April 30 deadline.

University Timetables

University timetables are quite different from main difference is the fact that in high schools, students have to be occupied and supervised every hour of the school day, or nearly every hour. Also, high school teachers generally have much higher teaching loads than is the case in universities As a result, it is generally considered that university timetables involve more human judgement whereas high school timetabling is a more computationally intensive task,

college study tips

Take action (with texts and lecture notes)While you may have depended on rereading chapters and rewriting your notes as your main study plan before, things will be different at the college level. "You may have to read 250 pages a week. You can't reread that three or four times," says Nist.
Instead, adjust the way you read and take notes. "Since college is a passive activity (you sit there, listen to lectures, take some notes), anything you can do to make it more active is a benefit." For example, jot notes in a textbook's margin to highlight key points, reflect on your reading, and review class notes. "Your high school history teacher may have given you a study guide before a test, and all you had to do was memorize it," says Nist. "Professors in college assume that you know the content; they expect you to synthesize and analyze issues."

Test this! Some tips and techniques:
Make some mega-flashcards. "When you used flashcards in high school, they contained factual information. Go beyond that with additional information and examples," advises Nist. Then group cards together by topic to study the concept as a whole, instead of memorizing isolated tidbits.
Savvy study groups. Sure it's a great excuse to order pizza and get some work done, but you and your study buddies should power up the prep. "Don't just quiz each other. Don't just give the definition of schizophrenia--provide how it is diagnosed and treated, too. Think about the 'why' and the 'how,' not just the 'what,'" says Nist. By becoming totally immersed in a topic as a group, there will be fewer surprises come test day. Speaking of tests...
Ace exam anxiety. "A lot of students who say they have test anxiety have it because they didn't study," says Nist. However, she adds, there are many legit cases of freezing up once the papers are distributed, which mostly stem from a lack of confidence in a subject you find tough. How to cope? "Learn relaxation techniques like deep breathing; don't participate in talking with students about the exam right before the test; tell yourself that you're prepared for the test and know the material."
Recognize clues and cues. So how are you supposed to know what to expect from a college exam if you've never had one before? Even worse, what if you only have two or three for the semester, and can't afford to mess up? The best way, says Nist, is to simply ask the professor. "Most professors are willing to share sample questions before the exam." Of course, if you pay close attention, you can also get an idea of what your prof considers a hot topic, by the emphasis he or she places on a particular point. Beyond that, carefully looking over the syllabus and speaking with students who've taken the class already are great ways to get an academic edge, adds Nist.
Stop school stress before it starts. How, you ask? Do whatever you can to maintain a good balance of classes. "Try not to put three or four reading-heavy classes (such as sociology, history, and political science) into your schedule," says Nist. You can get a book-break by interspersing performance classes like speech or computer science and/or problem-based courses like math or biology into your semester. Nist says that as a first-year student, "It's hard when you're at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak, to get the schedule you want, but try as much as possible to have balance."

Dear Editor,
Proposed Garbage Incinerator Project

I was amaze to read your article "An end to the SD Dump" in yesterday's paper. This article describe a proposal to construct a huge garbage incinerator here.I wish to point out several aspects of this plan which were not considered in the article.Firstly, the land on which this plant will be located is swampy and will be very costly to reclaim. It is also the home of several species of rare birds which might which might be driven away by the construction works.Next , the cost of the plant , which is estimated to be RM70 million seems excessive. The present system of dumping in old quarries is quite satisfactory , and operates for a fraction of the cost of this proposal.Lastly , do we really need a plant like this? The money that is to be spent on the imported machinery should be used to find ways to support local technology.
